NCADP

Program Overview

The Problem:

Cambodian Americans are dying of diabetes at a rate six time that of the general population. An estimated 300,000 Cambodians living in the United States are survivors of war, genocide and torture. Chronic conditions, such as diabetes, are directly related to historical trauma.

The Goal:

NCADP aims to reach 30% of the Cambodian community(approximately 60,000 Cambodians), Cambodian Community based organizations, Faith Based organizations, individuals and families, health care providers and agencies who serve Cambodians through intensive outreach, health education messages and partnership-building.

The Method:

The project is implemented at a grassroots level through the work of funded community health workers and developing local, state and national partnerships. Project activities aim to improve the health of Cambodian Americans who are at high risk of or living with diabetes by increasing their knowledge of diabetes and how serious psychological distress (SPD) impacts behaviors related to the effective prevention and management of diabetes.
